Best Books of 2005

As 2005 comes to a close, we at Kidsreads.com have compiled some of our favorite books of the year for children. Along with HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE by J.K. Rowling and THE PENULTIMATE PERIL by Lemony Snicket --- two of the year's most anticipated and talked-about releases --- we spotlight THE PENDERWICKS by Jeanne Birdsall, winner of this year's National Book Award, and one of the finalists, EACH LITTLE BIRD THAT SINGS by Deborah Wiles.

Other standouts from 2005 include THE KINGDOM KEEPERS, a thriller by Ridley Pearson that takes place in Disney World; FLUSH by Carl Hiaasen, a funny novel that also deals with a serious environmental issue; ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS, an amazing pop-up book courtesy of master paper engineers Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart; and ARTHUR SPIDERWICK'S FIELD GUIDE TO THE FANTASTICAL WORLD AROUND YOU by Spiderwick Chronicles co-authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.

In addition, we revisit the series that made their debuts this year. Among them are The Gatekeepers, a chilling supernatural series from Anthony Horowitz, and Michelle Paver's Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, which follows the adventures of a boy and his wolf-cub companion. Also, a number of series titles were updated in 2005, including Artemis Fowl, Alex Rider, the Inkheart trilogy and Redwall.

We hope you enjoy our year-end feature and make new discoveries along the way, as you look forward to the many literary offerings of 2006!

After any harrowing struggle, it is nice to consider checking into a hotel for a rest. In fact, this might be just the break Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire could use after their wearying deep-sea adventure.

A hotel can be a good choice for any family vacation. With so many floors, such a variety of rooms, and a curious array of guests, spending time in the safety of the right hotel can be the perfect learning environment for children of any age. A keen researcher like Klaus, an adept inventor like Violet, and a sharp-toothed culinary master like Sunny are all sure to find engaging diversions during their stay.

Regardless of how they pass their time while at a hotel, the three siblings will be sure to take in all the interesting sights and sounds --- and write them down --- just in case this episode turns out to be the darkest yet in a series of unfortunate events.

Based on this tongue-in-cheek description of THE PENULTIMATE PERIL that HarperCollins has provided, you just know that the Baudelaire orphans will be facing their most dangerous challenges yet!
