A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

I live by myself, and I have never been a good cook at all. My sister FayeBelle has always been the cook in the family. I can grow the vegetables she puts in her cooking, but I sure can't seem to cook a thing without burning it, making it look unappetizing, or putting in the wrong seasonings. But, I still like to try to cook, and sometimes FayeBelle comes over to teach me things.

Last night I decided to try making some fudge. I really wanted some chocolate, and I thought it looked easy to make when FayeBelle made it. Everything was going so well at first. I had the chocolate melting on the stove, the sugar all measured out, and the vanilla ready to be added at the very last minute. Then it happened! I sneezed about eight times, and knocked the pot off the stove. Hot melted chocolate went everywhere! I was covered with it, my fingers were burned, and I had such a bad mess, I had to call FayeBelle to come over to help me clean it up.

As FayeBelle scrubbed the front of the cabinets and floor, she told me she learned to cook by watching our mother. She said she used to sit on the tall stool so she could watch what our mother was doing up on the counters. Mom would tell FayeBelle everything she was doing as she made the meals, and FayeBelle soon began to be her helper. She said helping Mom was like a book she used to read to her children when they were little. It is a book called IN MY MOMMA'S KITCHEN and it is about how a family always seems to have loving times in the kitchen. FayeBelle even dropped the book off at my house this afternoon so I could read it. I have to admit that it really made me go back and remember all the great times we did have in Mom's kitchen when we were growing up.

Do you ever help out your family when they are cooking dinner? Have you ever had a bad accident like I did with my hot melted chocolate? It took FayeBelle and me an hour to clean up the mess. She was really sweet to come to help me. To thank her, I took her to an ice cream shop for a hot fudge sundae. I felt it was safe to get hot fudge that way.

Then, when they got out, they zoomed right back up. Even his neighbor thinks he has a wild imagination. Nobody seems to believe Thomas. Now Thomas and his father have to return to their home, Ormingat. Thomas doesn't want to leave earth. What will he do? You'll have to read SPACE RACE to find out.

When Zoe reads Natalie's manuscript, she doesn't believe how great the story is, and can't wait to read the ending. In fact, she is so convinced that it's a great book, she believes it should be published. And once something gets in Zoe's head, there is no turning back. Zoe sees the perfect opportunity to publish the book --- Natalie's own mother is an editor at Shipley Junior Books, but Natalie doesn't want special treatment from her Mom. So, Zoe concocts a scheme that will involve pen names, their English teacher, a phony office, Mrs. Nelson's mean boss, Zoe's lawyer father, and some big media coverage.

My teacher suggested the Lemony Snicket book, Austere Academy. It was great and I read it in two days! It's awesome. It was about the Baudelaire orphans who go to this awful school, and lots of unfortunate things happen to them. The whole series is called, "A Series of Unfortunate Events."  I loved it and am going to read the whole series! It's a nice quick-read!
