A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

My next door neighbor had a cousin named Maga Zine come to visit this last weekend. He was about the same age as my nephews, so I invited my nephews to come over to spend the weekend with me. At first, my nephews thought the boy was really shy, since he didn't talk to anyone. They almost thought he was rude. Then they realized he was deaf, and could not hear them talking to him. Pretty soon, the three of them worked out a way to communicate, and they had a great time playing basketball, playing catch, reading books, and walking through the trails in the park. Maga Zine was really nice, and he started to teach my nephews how to use sign language. My nephews worked hard learning some of the words so that they could talk to Maga Zine.

I remembered that I had a book on my shelf titled AMELIA LENDS A HAND that would help them. It is a story about a girl named Amelia who meets a deaf boy. She wanted to learn sign language, too. In the book are flash cards to help them learn sign language. Amelia has also drawn pictures of more signs. My nephews took the book home with them so that they could practice because they want Maga Zine to come back to see them when school is out. They want to make him feel good by showing him all the sign language they will learn.

Check out the hottest new books published this month. From Mary-Kate and Ashley to how to draw everything Dragon Ball Z, we are sure there's a book here you'll enjoy spending quality time with during those April showers.

A Television Movie: October Sky
In 1957, 14-year-old Homer Hickman was a boy in the small town of Coalwoad, West Virginia with big dreams. With his friends he learned how to build and launch his own rockets. He later joined the staff at NASA and wrote a trilogy of books about living and growing up in this rural area.  While these books were originally targeted for adults, many boys and girls in junior high and high school have told us that they enjoy them.  If you have ever had a dream, or would like to be inspired to follow one, you will not want to miss the movie based on Homer's first book in the trilogy --- Rocket Boys. It's called October Sky and it airs on Sunday, April 7th on ABC-TV at 7PM ET/6PM CT.

Book Review:

We Asked, You Said
To see everyone's answers to the last Question of the Week:

Besides Harry Potter which we KNOW you LOVED, what was your favorite movie based on a book?
Check out the responses at We Asked, You Said.

Quote of the Week
If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that wold be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day. --- E. B. White

Poems from fellow Bookworms

The Day the Earth Came Down

The day the earth came down,
was a terrible one indeed
September was the month
that it happened, so stealth
it couldn't believe that it happened
through two humanselves

Children to school
Parents to work
oh, why did it happen then?

The plane left port, the passangers sat
The people at base, took notice, of course
of a plane that was terrible off track
it crashed and burned and people screamed
they jumped or burned, they died both ways
there was no escape from it's firey depth

The children in school
were forced to keep working
they held lockdowns to keep them all inside
why did it have to happen then?

The parents at work
were paniced and scared
that their kin would be there
at the World Trade Center

At the WTC,
a horrible sight
the building crashed
and 3 others did too
people ran and were hospitalized
more than a thousand
amazing how one thing
can affect the whole world

So many people died
it was hard to believe
the brave firefighters tried to save
as many as they could
even some of them
were left in the soot

maybe this will teach us something, perhaps...

"That life is fragile and it doesn't always last."

In loving memory of those thousands who died in 09/11/01.
A special thanks to all the firemen, you made the biggest difference in the world.

Well, all I can say to the one who wrote in about Little Men not being any good, yes, Little Women is a lot better than Little Men, but Little Men is not as stupid as you think. You may have thought that Little Men is just a sequel and an original work was far more greater than a sequel. NO! And about that thing between TV shows and Little Men, I'll choose LITTLE MEN. It's up to you, maybe you don't know how to appreciate a sequel made by the same author.

Anyway, I like Artemis Fowl (I'm currently reading it and it's A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!), The Baby Sitters Club series (ALL of them, including sequels and other Baby Sitters books), Sweet Valley books (again, ALL of them), Harry Potter (Who could ever forget that?), The Amazing days of Abby Hayes (please feature this on your site, Booker T. Worm), The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Frightmares, My Baby Sitter is a Vampire Seires, Goosebumps, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, The Wind in the Willows, Little Men (to the person who wrote the letter in last week's newsletter about Little Men, no offense, this is a FREE country and you're not the ONLY person living in it, are you? >=( ), Little Women, The Series of Unfortunate Events... and... other horror books.

Whoever wrote the long letter on the left behind series I totally agree with you!! people think it is just fiction but it isn't!!! I am eleven and I love reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*****

My favorite books are ones of "Holes", "Knots in my Yo-yo String", an auto-biography or Jerry Spinelli, an award winning autor, and "Fourth Grade Rats". "Holes" was very long, yet made me get quite a chuckle. "Fourth Grade Rats", By Jerry Spinelli, is funny and a book even the "Non-readers" would not be able to put down. I recomend all books by Jerry Spinelli, and all award winning authors. But remember, Keep Reading and keep using your creativity!! :-)

hey, who ever said Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials  Were for 6th grade and up are wrong.  I'm in 5th grade and i've read all 3 of um.  I do agree with the joke section thing.  And who ever wrote the yellow caution tape poem should write a book of poetry and get it published.

Thank you for listenting to my need and replying!! Now the newsletter looks so orginized with jokes and poems and letters!! My dog is sitting here right now with me lol.Well to make this true-JK Rowling did not copy anything and she was not sued, she told the public that that didn't happen. Also, for good readers, you should read Marry Higgin Clark's books. They're very advanced. They are supposed to be for grownups, but I understand them fine because I have a movie going on in my mind and if there are anywords I don't know I look them up in a dictonary but usually I can figure out what they mean without having to look in the dictonary. The two books I have are:Pretend You Don't See Her & I'll Be Seeing You.Quite the oppsite huh? LOL

If you want to read some great books read The Series Of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, T*Witches, Wild at Heart series, anything that was written by Tamora Pierce, any books that were written by E. Nesbit (the books are really old), and Lord Of The Rings.

*****

I've been hearing a lot of things on how an author is saying that J. K.  Rowling copied his (or her?) ideas. What author is claiming that he/she was copied, and from what book? Also, is it true that the 5th Harry Potter book hasn't been released yet because she's being sued by an author who "says" he/she was copied? I think you should put some information about that in the Newsletter, because I want to find out what happened. If you can't put information in the Newsletter or the KidsRead site, can you please tell me where I can find out?

From Booker T. Worm: Look for an update of our Harry Potter area this month! I'll be sure to announce it in the newsletter for all to see.
