A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

Did you turn your TV off this week for TV Turnoff week? We did at my house. The worm kids protested a lot when they heard we were doing this. They were not very happy. For a while they wandered around the house looking for things to do. Then we soon heard them chattering while playing board games, and later it was so quiet that we had to see if they were even there. They were all sitting in the room reading. What did you do when you turned off your TV? Why not try it again?

April is National Poetry Month, and the teachers at the worm kids' school have been assigning poems for the kids to read and write. On Saturday, there will be a poetry reading program at the library. The worm kids will be reciting poems that they have found in books, and poems they have written. The art classes had a project of making pictures to go with the poems. Those will be on display in the library, too.

I love to read poetry, do you? One of my favorite poets is Shel Silverstein. He wrote all types of poems that children have enjoyed. My niece, named Page Marker, is doing a special report on Shel Silverstein for the poetry reading program on Saturday. She used the information we have on him here at KidsReads.com to make her report. Then, she memorized several of his poems from his book called WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS to recite. Do you have a favorite poem or poet? I'd love to hear about it!

If you like poetry, you would probably enjoy our feature on Shel Silverstein. When you get to the opening page of the feature, look on then left side of the page for links to more information. There is even a link to some poetry activities there.

If you like to write poetry, then you for sure want to check out our poetry contest! Make sure to read below for more information on the contest.

Thanks for reading the newsletter this week! Remember to click on the blue underlined letters to go to any feature listed in the newsletter.

Now on to more news…

Poems from fellow Bookworms

Windows break, the house starts to shake, people run out to there car to find a safer place, the ground splits apart and people fall into its never ending hole. My dog falls in the Giant hole, I try to hold back the tears. my mother grabs me and my sisters and we race to our attic for saftey. Soon we feel the earth move, as its hole in the ground starts to close. We step out of the attic and go out the door. We all look at the disaster that stood before all of us. I'm greatful that i still have a life.

Trip to the Sea

I go to the sea,
To listen to the sound
And oh, what I see,
Keep my feet on the ground
I get the sand,
And I see the gold
I cover my hand,
To make them hold

My school had a contest that other schools in the County could enter. Fifth graders through twelfth had the choice of writing a poem, a non fiction story, and a fiction story. I chose to write a poem and a fiction story. My story did not win. but my poem made it to the championships and ended up coming in first place. Out of all the other fifth graders that entered in the poem category my poem won. I was so excited. I just found out on Monday from my Vice Principal. I thought that you might like to see what my poem was and here it is it is called I'm Just a Girl.

I'm Just a Girl

I'm just a girl trying to find her way in this crazy upside down world. I get lost anytime I feel like I do not belong here. I lose my way when I take the wrong ways. But then I remember I'm just a girl trying to find my way.

I'm just a girl who feels lost around the rest of the world. I seem so sad I want to cry. I'm just a girl. I lost my way along the trip that I am taking. I am so lonely with no friends by my side. I feel like I want to die but that's when I realize I'm just a girl.

All my friends they seem to be so far away when they are so close to me. They tell me I am the best at this and at that but it seems that they're just lying to me. That is when I remember I'm just a girl who's trying to find her way.

I thought I would have a chance to write to the actual Gail Carson Levine. But, I think I will just tell you how much I adore her books. The tails are full of excitement, romance, and every page is full of something funny or sad or even terrifying! Her creativity makes me wish I was in her books. When I read her books I feel like I am actually watching TV. Her writing is so realistic. Tell her that if you have the chance. I love ELLA ENCHANTED & THE TWO PRINCESSES OF BAMARRE!!!!!!!! Keep on writing Gail Carson Levine!!!!
Sincerely, Gail Carson Levine's Favorite Reader & Admirer

In response to the person that was having trouble finding The last 2 Protector of the small books, those are the ones about Paige, right? Because if that is the case, they are not out yet, I know becuase my friend is madly obsessed with all Tamora Pierce books and these are her favorite yet.

2 newsletters ago someone mentioned about they didn't like this newsletter and there should be some Mary Kate and Ashley stuff and Hot Wheels stufff in it. This is a reading newsletter, not a Mary Kate and Ashley, nor a Hot Wheels!!

To the people that mentioned Lemony Snicket again.....I've read books 1-7 and I want to read book 8 now,but I have to get it first or ask my teacher to borrow it. The books are really funny and I read and read and read and when my Mom calls me, I actually block her out accidently!!!

Hi! I'd just like to tell you about a new series-FROM THE FILES OF MADISON FINN. Madison is a seventh grade girl and she has lots of troubles! I am reading the 7th book now, there are 7 total so far!

I would like to express my feelings towards Time For Kids. Anyone who reads it please listen to this. The reporters at Time For Kids are all children! 5-7! If you read the article about TV Turnoff week and read about Israel and Arabs and believed that Arabs don't have their own country, you must read this. Arabs have 99 and 9 10ths of the Middle East. Israel has 1 tenth of 1% of the Middle East. Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Sinceta, Afganistan, and Jordan all are Arabs. My mother has made a special Emergency Responce Comitee for Israel.

I was reading the newsletter and I saw a review about Ender's Game. The book is totally awesome! My friend was reading it during the summer, and I had to wait for her to finish it. When she was finally done, I read the book in one day. It was the best! Now I've read the whole series, and the first two books in the Bean series. They are so good! If there are any bookworms out there who like fantasy or science-fiction, this is the book for you! I love Ender's Game!

I'd like to say to all the kids and "KIDS" (meaning parents) who read the newsletter that some books are timeless. If I said that my nickname WAS Bookworm, you'd know that I read a lot, especially when I was in school. The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis are some of the best books you could ever read. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote some wonderful books - On the Banks of Plum Creek was one of the first I ever read and my dad was fond of Farmer Boy, about her husband's boyhood! When it comes to mystery novels, nothing is better than the original Nancy Drew - I read them when I was 12 because my mom had a set. Any of the Isaac Asimov Robot and Foundation novels and stories are terrific. If you like robot stories, Tanith Lee has one titled "The Silver-Metal Lover" about a robot who is more than a robot (older kids). Books are a way to remove yourself from the troubles of the day, can teach values in a way that parents sometimes can't and, at the same time, a well written book (even Dickens' paragraph-long sentences) helps you with proper language and even spelling. Who knew that something so fun was good for you??!!!

*****

To the person in the last newsletter that asked, the third book of the protector of the small series can be found at B. Dalton Booksellers. The third book of the circle opens series can be found in the same place. The forth books aren't out yet!

*****

I like Tamora Pierce's books, Madeleine L'Engle's books, and Dianna Wynne Jones's books. They are the best!

*****

When you are upset, everyone should read Roald Dahl books, or Elizabeth Honey books, or Carolyn Keene books.

*****

The Harry Potter and Sweet Valley series are great but another good series is Fingerprints by Melinda Metz. I also LOVE Nancy Drew especially the Nancy Drew Files, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Supermysteries, and Nancy Drew on Campus. More good books are The Wish by Gail Carson Levine, Soon Be Free by Lois Ruby, and Katerina by Kathryn Winter. The Royal Diaries and Dear America books are also great.

*****

My favorite Dahl book is Danny Champion of the World. It's really interesting. I'm sure you've read it. Right?!

*****

Here are some books that I think you should read:
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Judy Blume
The Great Green Notebook of Katie Roberts, how just turned 12 on Monday Amy Hest
The Song of the Lioness Quartet (Alanna, The First Adventure; In the Hand of the Goddess; The Woman Who Rides Like a Man; Lioness Ramant) Tamora Pierce
There are many more I think you should read, but I'll tell you later!

My favorite book(s) that I read were:
The hobbit
and
Lord of the rings, Fellowship of the ring

*****

I agree with the girl that said that J.R.R Tolkien should be more recognised for his books and intelligence.
I think there should be more Lord of the rings on your site!
Lord of the rings has like collected over 5 million dollars for the movie, which encourages people to read the Hobbit and Lord of the rings.
You should have pictures of the cast, pictures drawn from the fans and stuff like that!
MORE LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*****

I just wanted to talk about what I think of books and reading. I read ALOT and I am also the smartest in class (sorry, but I'm not bragging!). I find that reading books is, not only fun to find out about another persons life and diffculties, but it also makes you have a good sense in grammer. It teaches you new words too. When I was young and started reading, I found some new words in books like "scowled" and "groaned". I didn't look up those words in the dictionary, but after reading those words a couple of times, I began to understand what action they were doing to their feelings. I also learnt to spell alot of word and when my class are finding spelling words, I find it hard, and have to look in a big dictionary! I hope everybody understands that a fact of reading is that it educates you, once you're good in grammer, you'll find other subjects easier. So, do not quit reading!!!
Age 10

*****

I'm 11 years old. I love fantasy books, especially Harry Potter and books by Diana Wynne Jones. I also enjoy Redwall, the Royal Diary Series, books by Sharon Creech, and books by Tamora Pierce. I recently read Ella Enchanted and did a book report on it. It's a wonderful book and definitely one of my favorites.
I want to be a writer when I grow up. Right now I'm just working on poetry and short stories. I'm pretty much a beginner, but I hope to be able to write books for kids my age when I'm an adult. I love Kidsreads.com and receiving your newsletter. It always keeps me updated on interesting new books and informed about my favorite authors and series.
Anyway, I'm asking if you know any good fantasy books that you would recommend. I'm always looking for new books to read. Thanks!
