A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

Are you finished with school yet? The schools here have another two weeks to go, and the wormkids are getting excited about having the summer off. My niece has been chosen to give a speech at her school's Honor's Day Program. She was so excited, but she is really nervous about having to talk in front of so many other worms. She was chosen to do this because she had the highest grades at her school. She will also win several other awards next week for her achievements in her classes. She wants to come over and let me help her write her speech. Do you have any ideas for her? What do you think she should talk about at the program? I'll share your ideas with her.

Speaking of awards, we have made a list of some special awards given to books and authors for the year 2002. These awards are given for different kinds of books, and by different organizations. For books to be given these awards, they have to be very special. If you would like a great list of books to start off your summer reading list, you might want to check out the books on the 2002 Awards lists.

Thanks for reading the newsletter this week! Remember to click on the blue underlined letters to go to any feature listed in the newsletter.

Memorial Day: Remembering Our Soldiers
How will you celebrate this Memorial Day? Do you have any big plans? On this Memorial Day, we salute the brave men and women who served our country during World War II with a round-up of books and a conversation with author and historian Stephen E. Ambrose. We hope your Memorial Day holiday is the best and safest ever!

AMERICA: A Patriotic Primer
Don't miss out on this beautifully illustrated, historically informative book for early readers. AMERICA: A Patriotic Primer was written by Lynne Cheney, (wife of our Vice President, Richard Cheney), and illustrated by Robin Glasser. What better way to learn about our nation's history than by learning to read? Why not share your love of reading with our feature, which includes an interview with the author, pictures of the author and illustrator, and a trivia game?

Cheney's proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross, and to projects that foster appreciation of America's history. Simon & Schuster will donate a portion of their proceeds to organizations that promote childhood literacy in America.

Poems from fellow Bookworms

*****

A crush is like a flower, which hasn't yet bloomed,
A kiss is like a flower with no petals,
Love is as strong as gold,
And new life is as precious as a cat.

*****

The Wind
It howls
It screeches
It has a mind of its own
A haven of happiness and
privacy alone

*****

Florida

Florida, Florida, my kind of place
With Cape Canaveral to go to outer space
With Disney World and Sea World there,
Florida's the coolest, I declare
From where the juicy oranges come from
Florida is fun, unless you're dumb
With beautiful beaches and wonderful weather
Let's all go visit Florida and let's go together

Jokes from fellow Bookworms

What do you get if you mix a crocidille with a peacock? A peacroc! Some of my friends asked me if I made that joke up. And I did. I liked how everyone smiled at that joke.

What do ghosts eat for desert? I scream and boo berry pie. Get it?

*****

I've read the Dear America series. It's really good! And after you've read all of them, you can start the My Name is America series. It's basically the same, except the books are the journals of boys.

*****

I love to read and a very good book is The Boggart by Susan Cooper. I think you should read it. Reading is my favorite activity and sometimes i get in trouble at school for reading when i am not suppose to. Reading is fun and iagree with the person who said everyone should read.

*****

I am 12 and I love reading. I read all the time. But I have a problem. I'm running out of good books to read. Please suggest some!!!!! I'm desperate!!!!!!!!!!!!

*****

The new book by Eoin Colfer called Artemis Fowl has just come out. When I read it, I thought that the idea was good, but the story and plot were very slow to start with. The climax of the book didn't come until the end when Captain Short got free! Personally, if I had to rate this book on a one-to-ten basis, I would rate it a 7 and a half. I also thought that the part of Artemis Fowl's family all being in trouble with the law and the centaur, Foaly were all there and interesting, but there was not enough room for them. In this book, the author kept repeating things that the Fowl family had done over the decades. I thought that was a little distracting, yet I also thought that it was pretty interesting to know about a millionaire that was only twelve years old. This is only my opinion, I talked to some other people and they thought the same thing, but other people may have different opinions, key points and ratings depending on their preferences for fantasy and realistic magic and mayhem.

This is in response to the May 9th newsletter:

Thank you to the person who visited the United States from Australia. It was kind of you to express your sorrow about September 11th.

*****

I loved Sondonk, Princess of the Moon and Stars. I was sad when I finished it. I loved the culture the book brought me from Korea, and every day I would go to the bookstore hoping that it would be in. Finally it was. And now I added it to my whole other collection of Princess Diaries. But I think there should be a Prince Diaries, just to make it interesting. And some of the boys would be future husbands of the girls!

*****

I love reading fantesy books. my favorite book is jaydens rescue. it's the best book ever it's by vladimir tumanou. it's about a kid named alex who loves to read books (like me) and ends up going to another place where he has to save jayden the young queen who was taken be an evil sorceror in his castle alex, vanessa and sam are going to save.

*****

I love the magic tree house books. Just today I did the magic tree house trivia. I hope she writes more books.

*****

I love OUT OF THE DUST ! it my favorite book ever

*****

I love star wars book they are great and i love to read and i love books !!!!!!

*****

I really like to read, and I really liked the Harry Potter books, so I went to see the movie. The movie was really bad, and they left out really good parts. I hate that people who haven't read the book see the movies and think that the books are exactly the same, so they don't read them. The same happened with other books that were made into movies.

*****

I love your quizzes! They're really cool.I especially liked the 'Star Wars' trivia.

*****

I like a lot of books but my favorite kind of books are magic tree house books by Mary pope osborne. she is a great writer.everyone in my class loves her books they think their great!

*****

I also love Chasing Redbird. It's really sad, but kinda happy. I like Zinny's uncle.

*****

The book that I am reading now is soooooo sad and sooooooo good. It is called Where the Red Fern Grows - I recommend it for everyone!

*****

OK TWO THINGS: To the person who said girls don't need Mary-Kate and Ashley, I totally agree. This is a BOOK site and if you want to hear about their BOOKS, then send an e-mail about em'! Its too easy! Plus, I really don't like them much. And to the person who said they love Andrew Clement's books, I agree on that, too. His books are awesome, even if they talk about the same things sometimes.
