A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

Last week, the New England Zoo unveiled a Sculpture Garden to honor Theodor Geisel, better known to all of us as Dr. Seuss. As a tribute, bronze sculptures of the characters he brought to life for us through books are being brought to their own life in a sculpture garden. They are displayed on the wide green linking the Springfield, Massachusetts city library and its four museums that helped in developing the author's imagination. The project cost $6.2 million dollars to build, and Geisel's stepdaughter, Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, a sculptor, 7 years to translate his drawings from paper to bronze.

Although Dr. Seuss died in 1991, his words and pictures live on through his many books. Do you love Dr. Seuss books? If so, we have the perfect place for you! An entire feature dedicated to Dr. Seuss, complete with trivia, a biography of the author, and what we love best, books!

Thanks for reading the newsletter this week! Remember to click on the blue underlined letters to go to any feature listed in the newsletter.

The Dog Who Loved to Read
There once was a dog named Fred,
he lived under the bed,
he stayed up late,
with his friend Nate,
and slept with a flashlight at night.

He would read till dawn,
with dew on the lawn,
He loved books, you see,
if I was a book he would read me!
The dog who read was Fred.

*****

My favorite poem:
Eletelephony
Once there was an elephant
Who tried to use the telephant.
No, No! I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone!

(Dear me I am not certain quite
that even now I've got it right!)

However it was, he got his trunk
Entangled in the telefunk.
The more he tried to get it free,
The louder buzzed the telefee!

I fear I'd better drop the song
Of Elephop and telephong.

Here is a Haiku Poem
Springtime
Sweet smelling flowers
Animals wake from their sleep
A soft breeze blows grass<

SOME FUNNY NURSERY RYHMES

Mary had a little lamb,
A little bread and a little jam,
A little pie and a little cake,
Then Mary had a stomach ache.

Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey,
When along came a spider,
That sat down beside her,
And said: what's in the bowl, blondie?

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses,
And all the King's men,
Ate scrambled egg for two weeks

Hickory dickory dock,
Two mice ran up the clock,
The clock struck one,
But the other one got away.

*****

Fly Away Eagle

Fly away eagle,
fly far away,
do not let these ropes guide your way.
You are free now, you must believe,
for you must leave.
Before they return to take you away.

Fly away eagle,
fly far away.
fly as far as your wings may.
get away from here, you must!
for there is no telling who you can trust.

Fly away eagle,
in the dawn's early light,
while the time is still right!

I loved the lion the witch and the wardobe. I read it in fourth grade, or last year, whichever you prefer, and I have read many books and that was the first book I really enjoyed. I was reading it when I was walking home, when I had free time, anytime I had a chance to read it. It took me to a place I have never went before , it had a witch lion, a bit of humor like in the beginnging of chapter four.It is still one of my favorite books and i read it whenever I come across one. Now books like the reptile room by Lemony Snicket is a good book, but I will always remember that book by C.S.Lewis

I love your website!! You should do a book review on the Avalon books because they are really awesome books that any girl who loves to read will love these books!!! Does anyone know when the 5th Harry Potter is coming out?? I hope its good!!
This is a list of titles that I love to read:
1. The Lottie Project
2. Artemis Fowl
3. Harry Potter #4
4. Harry Potter #2
5. Emerald, Amber and Jet (this book is from a series of books called Nine Lives)
6. The Adventures Of Wishbone (I love these books!!!!!!!!!!)
7. The Witches ( one of many favorite books by Roald Dahl)
8. Little House On the Prairie Books
9. Avalon Series
10. GooseBumps
11. Charlottes Web
And a lot, lot, lot more. But those are my aboslute fav!!!!! I think you should have a trivia game for Avalon, just because The Avalon Series are great books!!! But your website is grate without the Avalon series!!! Thanks!! I know have a list over a hundred books to read this summer!!! Actully, every book I read is going to go on a list, at the end of the summer I'll look back at my last number and see how many books I've read, so far I've read two and we got out of school yesterday!!! One reason I'm reading a lot of books is to get ready for 5th grade reading, even though my reading level is already 8th grade!!! But also at the middle school I'm going to when school starts again, encourages reading a lot!!! Especially the counselers. All you have to do is read one book over the summer, do a book report on it and turn it into one of the counselers, and you get a king-sized candy bar!!! One of the counselers there is my fav and we know each other because my brother went to her sometimes. Sorry my letters so long, but I love writing as much as reading. I hope everyone read at least half of this, because I guess the other half is really important. Bye Booker and other readers!! From a fellow bookworm.
P.S. I have 843 books in my bookshelf in my room, basement bookshelf and brothers books.I have a private library that my friends come to. My brother books are part of this library. I don't know but I think I have more than 843, oh well,I'll go count and write you guys later!!!

I am in fifth grade and I love to read. :) One of My favorite books is No Flying In The House. It is about a girl who has a 3 inch high dog and one day a glass cat comes to life and tells her she is a fairy! I also like P. S longer letter later. it is about 2 girls Tara*Starr and Elizabeth who are very different but are best friends. Elizabeth had to move away and the whole book is full of their letters. The sequel to it is called snailmail no more in that book is full of their E-mails! I also love The Series of Unfortunate Events it is about 3 Baudelaire Children having bad luck because of Evil Count Olaf. There is a really good book called The Giggler Treatment about weird creatures who make mean grownups step in dog poo.
Well, that's it signed, Your fellow booker : )

to the person who said: I really like to read, and I really liked the Harry Potter books, so I went to see the movie. The movie was really bad, and they left out really good parts. I hate that people who haven't read the book see the movies and think that the books are exactly the same, so they don't read them. The same happened with other books that were made into movies. I agree with you! They left out the best parts! Its some peoples favorite movie but they havent read the books most of the time! Once i read princess Diaries And when the movie came out I went to see it. It was a good movie but it was way differant! Why do they have to make movies about books? A Curious Booker

*****

I love the Lemony Snicket books. The Bad Beginning, and all the rest of the series are excellent! everyOne should read them :)

*****

Hi Everybody!! I just wanted to remind you to sign up for your local library's summer reading program!! Most librarys have them, and it's a great way to have fun reading in the summer!!!

Hey...here are some good books I reccomend:
Goodbye, Amanda the Good--about a girl named Amanda that is a perfect child until she goes to junior high...she hangs out with a "Club" that smokes, steals, skips school, and do other risky bad things. Amanda almost joins that group/club but you have to read the book to find out what happens next!!

One Small Dog--about a boy named Curtis who goes to the shelter to get a dog. he gets one that's very small, cute, loveable, and nice...but not until he brings him home! when he brings the dog that he named sammy home, he eats sneakers, steals food, and even bites people! read the book to see if curtis gets to keep the dog or not

Fill in the Blank-The Friendship Ring-Tommy--about a boy named Tommy who likes this girl thats a tomboy, Zoe but he never realizes how much he likes her until she asks him "Who do you like?" then Tommy realizes that theres only one name that can fill in the blank...

And to the girl that mentioned the tuck everlasting movie and book...we read that in school too and it was ok but a little boring at some times and we saw the movie too but it really stinked cuz it had really really really bad lighting so dont even bother watching it...the "movie" inside ur mind will be better lol

*****

For the more advanced, YA readers out there, I'd definitely reccommend anything by Jenny Carroll or Meg Cabot. (Princess Diaries, The Mediator, 1-800-WHERE-R-U, and more). She ROCKS!

*****

I love to read books. I have read most of the books that you show. I think that you should advertise the books "Unicorns of Balinor." By Mary Stanton. There really good books. there about magic and are really cool.

*****

Hiya Bookworm! I love a book I just finished called "For your eyes only (FYEO)." It's about this girl that writes to her sub teacher. He never talks in the book but sometimes she says he says something. It's talks about alot of stuff like divorse. I'm glad I checked it out from the libary! It's a great book for the older kids out there!

*****

In school we are reading The Bridge to Terabitia. It is very good. I also like Beautiful Joe it is about a Cur who tells his life story. it is almost like Black Beauty but a dog is telling the story instead. I would recommend it to anyone who loves animals and stands up for animal justice.

*****

To the person who wrote that they are a sixth grader and are only 11, the names of the series are The Immortals, the Lioness and the Protector of the Small.
--A very dilligent reader

*****

If you like to read about unicorns and horses you should check out these series of books. They are called THE UNICORNS OF BALINOR, they are so cool!

*****

I think what kind of website you have going is FANTASTIC. It's fun and safe for children all over! Every thing is about the books that I personaly love. One of my very most favorites is Where The Red Fern Grows. I am only 10 but I have a lot of favorite books. I sujest one book you should read and thats The Lion, The Witch, And The Wadrobe. It's a very wonderful book!! From: Your Friend!!!!

*****

To the person who said that she/he got in trouble in class for reading.
That happens to me too. I usaully do it in math class because math is so boring. I would do my reading in homeroom, but I always have homework to finish. Now that's it's summer I am planning to read a lot of books. I'm am so excited about Ella Enchanted coming out, and also about the 2nd Harry Potter. I heard they aren't going going to do a 4th Harry Potter, which is stupid because not making a movie for all the Harry Potter books is like not finishing a project that you started. I forgot one Ella Enchanted, thats my abosolute fav!!!! A book worm that's going into 5th grade (like you care, but it's exciting for me because I'm finally going to middle school)
P.S. I like Ella Enchanted better than Avalon (now do you remember me??)

*****

I agree with whomever that said that people who watch the Harry Potter movie and not read the book, automatically assume that the books are bad. It's true, because lots of people i know, (including my parents) think so. I don't think the movie directors should have cut out so many parts and made it more on the 'creepy' side. There are no funny parts in the movie, either. I really don't care how long the movie is, as long as it has every singe detail in it!

*****

To the 12 year old person who said they've run out of books:
I'm 12, and i've run out of good books too! So I keep on reading the Harry Potter books (my all-time favorite) over and over again, and also the Unfortunate Events Series. Here are some good books:
1. Evil Encounter by Sonia Levitin
2. Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
See, I told you I am running out of books!

*****

I'm so excited about summer because I can do the things I love all day long! I can play soccer with my friends, go swimming in my pool, play with my dog, visit the library as much as I want, go to the movies, and read, read, READ!!! Right now I'm going to share some of my favorite books with everyone. I'm a big fan of the authors Sharon Creech (Bloomability is my favorite) and Bruce Coville. You should check out their books. I also recently read Loser by Jerry Spinelli. It's a good book because it makes you realize how others who are lonely might feel, and it might change the way you think about some people who are "losers" and give you the guts to go up and talk to them. You might find out that they're really a good person inside. I'm also really into fantasy and the Harry Potter books are the BEST! I love the movie and I have the DVD. The Artemis Fowl books are also really great and so are books by Gail Carson Levine. I also am really into the Royal Diaries books because it's so fun to learn about the lives of Princesses. My favorite one is Mary, Queen of Scots. And Cleopatra and Victoria: May Flower of Britannia are other favorites. The Giver by Lois Lowry is another wonderful book. So, those are just a few of my favorite books. I hope you will check some of them out because I guarantee you'll find a wonderful reading experience if you do. And if you haven't read Harry Potter by now, pick up the first one and get reading! You're totally missing out. Well, that's it from me!
