A NOTE FROM BOOKER
Hello!
Our theme for this week is birthdays! Don't you love to celebrate them? We do too.
This week many of you may have celebrated the birthday of Harry Potter on July 31st. We did too by relaunching our Harry Potter feature with a whole new design. We have everything Harry in one place including trivia games, reading group guides and information about Book IV, now available in paperback. Read down in this newsletter for ways we recommend that you can celebrate Harry's birthday, although a bit belatedly. See details on the ballparks around the country that are celebrating Harry as well. Baseball and Harry --- what could be more fun?
July is also the birthday of Kidsreads.com and this year we turned FOUR! Celebrate the 4th Birthday of Kidsreads.com with a special contest where you tell us how you found Kidsreads.com, and what it means to you as a reader.
Hope you are keeping cool wherever you are this week. It's been really warm for us worms, so we have been hiding in the shade and reading. Maybe you've seen us under your lawn chair!
Now on to this week's news...
--- Booker T. Worm
Question of the Week
Here's this week's Question of the Week:
What is your favorite audiobook so far?
Send your answer to YouSaid@kidsreads.com. Write "Question" in the subject line. We'll post your answers online! Tell your friends to submit their answer to the question of the week.
Poll
This week's poll question asks: Do you listen to audiobooks? And, have you listened to any of the Harry Potter audiobooks?
To vote in this week's Poll, click here now. Do NOT send responses to the poll to BookerTWorm@aol.com or your vote will not be counted.
Don't forget to check out the last week's past poll results at: Be honest, who decides what you read?
Happy Birthday Harry Potter!
July 31, 2002 marks Harry Potter's birthday. On July 31 and August 6 eleven major league baseball teams nationwide will celebrate "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Day." As part of this program, fans attending the games will have the chance to win a copy of the newly released paperback edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Scholastic has created buttons that say "I'm a fan of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" that will be given away at the games, and a special "Happy Birthday Harry Potter" message will appear on score boards. Participating baseball teams include the Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Anaheim Angels, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros.
Ten Ways to Celebrate Harry Potter's Birthday
1) Re-read all the Harry Potter books (Note: We KNOW this will take more than a day.)
2) Listen to all the audiobooks (This will take pretty long too, but you also can listen as you sleep.)
3) Watch the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie...then watch the trailer for the next movie.
4) Play a Harry Potter board, computer or Game Boy game.
5) Dream of yourself as a Quidditch star.
6) Eat a big bowlful of Jellybelly's Bertie Bots Beans
7) Make your own Harry Potter poster to hang in your room.
8) Build Harry's world with Legos
9) Bake a cake and decorate it to look like Hogwarts Castle
10) Draw a lightening bolt on your forehead!
KidsReads.com Birthday Contest

Note from Booker: Is there a great read that you'd like to tell others about? If so, drop me a note about it at BookerTWorm@aol.com and maybe you'll see it posted in the next newsletter!
I am reading a great book called Acquaintance With Darkness. It is written by Ann Rinaldi. It is about a 14 year old girl named Emily who is living in the tragic time of when Abraham Lincoln was president. Also, her father fought in the war and was killed and her mother is dying slowly. Worst of all, her uncle Valentine is involved in shady business and is even suspected of being an accomplice of John Wilkes Booth. If you read ths book there's a surprise at every turn. Please consider putting this in a review. It is also for ages 12 and up for historic mystery.
*****
I love your site. It is so cool. At least I think so because I love to read. I am reading a book called Under Copp's Hill. It is a great book. I read all the time I wake up early in the morning and read before I go to bed. I read for two hours.
*****
I just wanted to say thanks for making this wonderful page of authors. It is really helping me find out my favorite authors. For example, Gary Paulsen, and Dr. Seuss. Them two are my favorite to authors. Because I have been reading Dr. Seuss since i was a real little girl. And now I am going in to 7th grade and i just found out about Gary Paulsen last year in 6th grade when i read HATCHET so now i have been reading all of his other wonderful stories.
*****
Great book series for OLDER, ADVANCED readers: the Zion Covenant series, by Bodie Thoene. (6 books, 430+ pages) Their set in WWII Europe; Jews v.s. Nazis and Nazis v.s. Nazis while all of Europe is in a turmoil. She weaves several plots together into an amazing masterpiece! With a light romance and the Gestapo, you never know what's going to happen next. I couldn't put them down!
*****
The Word Eater and Make It Three are two of my favorite books. I forget who they are by. But they are great books! -Reading in SC.
*****
I am 12 years old and my mom talked me into reading Nancy Drew. So far this summer, I've read about 23 Nancy Drew Mysteries -- I started with #1 The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene, and am working my way through the whole series. Don't be put off by the fact that your mom probably read these books -- they are really good mysteries. The older ones are the best, but some of the newer, more modern ones are good too. Try one and you'll be hooked!
*****
I read a great book called Libby on Wednesday. It's about this girl named Libby that likes writing stories, but she hates reading them aloud. One day though she winds up in this writing club and is forced to share her stories. Can she keep her cool? If you like hearing stories and are involved with reading and writing, this is the book for you!
*****
I would like to recommend some books. I love ALL of Caroline B. Cooney books. Also the Left Behind series and the Madison Finn Series are great!
*****

*****
I thought of a good book. It is called Third Grade Is Terrible.
*****
A great book series i have gotten into is the series of Madison Finn by Laura Dower. It is a great series about a girl who is in 7th grade. It is one of my favorite book series. Also, the Princess Diaries series is great, they are by Meg Cabot. My favorite Author though is Jaqueline Wilson. She is from England and writes GREAT books. Check them out! --age 12
*****

*****
My favorite books are: The Alice books by Phylis Naylor. These are books for girls, but they are really good.
*****
I think your site is great. It makes kids that are growing up think about their future. Here are some questions I have been asked.....How is it like when you grow up? What is my future going to be like? What if I fail 5th grade? To all of those questions I have said, "Don't worry. There is a website that helps you know what it is like. Here is the site:http://aolsvc.kidsreads.com" They have all thanked me now.
*****
Ever since the movie Harry Potter came out everyone started reading the books. What about the people that read the books way B4 they knew about the movie?, Those are the true fans.
*****
To whoever recommended Cleopatra, Princess of the Nile, I have some news. If you like that kind of book (a journal-like novel) there are more of those, about different subjects. There is the Royal Diaries series, which includes Cleopatra, and there is the Dear America series. To those boys, or girls who like to read about historic boys, there is a series, by the same authors as the Royal Diaries and the Dear America series, called My Name is America. All of these books come in a journal form, and are very interesting to read. The newest Royal Diaries book is Sondok, Princess of the Moon and Stars. It is about a girl who doesn't like to act like royalty, and she wants to stargaze like the royal astronomers, but her father doesn't think that it is good for girls to do that "manly" sort of thing. This story is set in ancient Korea. -a dedicated reader
*****
I have heard numerous rumors about and concerning both the 2nd Harry Potter Movie (The Chamber of Secrets) and the 5th Harry Potter Book, (The Secret of the Phoenix). I am confused on whether to believe that Harry Potter (The fifth book) is coming out with the second Harry Potter movie, or next year, separately. The Harry Potter book series is very important, (It is one of my favorite books) and I have friends who are just dying to find out when the fifth Harry Potter book will be out. -A dedicated reader
P.S. Does anyone have the address to write to either Tamora Pierce (The Daine Series, Circle of Magic, Protector of the Small) and/or Brian Jacques (Redwall, Castaways of the Flying Dutchman)?
