Stay "Cool" with a Good Book
|
Happy summer! While May in New York was very cool, this week has been screaming "summertime" with very hot weather. My sons still are in school, but their heads are on vacation. I am sure that many of you know what that feels like. It's soooo hard to concentrate when it is this nice outside! So I am glad to share that we have plenty of cool reads this month on Kidsreads.com.
We are THRILLED to announce the start of a brand new MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY giveaway (you may remember we did one last year when the first book in the series came out). This year, Little, Brown for Young Readers is giving away 25 bags stuffed with six great books from some of your favorite series --- including THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY and its sequel, THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY AND THE PERILOUS JOURNEY. Read all the details of the contest here.
We have series update news on four groups of titles that have new books now available in stores. For Warriors: Power of Three, the third title, OUTCAST, follows the feline heroes in a new, dangerous adventure. In QUESTE, the fourth book in the Septimus Heap series, Septimus and Jenna try to rescue Nicko, who has become trapped in another time. The third of R. L. Stine’s latest Goosebumps Horrorland books, called MONSTER BLOOD FOR BREAKFAST!, will give you the chills --- you’ll never look at breakfast the same way again! And Geronimo Stilton is back in GERONIMO AND THE GOLD MEDAL MYSTERY, and this time he’s headed to Athens to write a report on the Olympics. This story will get you in the mood for the Summer Olympics, which begin August 8th.
Another sporty tale you may enjoy comes from Mike Lupica. THE BIG FIELD tells the story of a shortstop who is replaced by a better player --- but the new kid has a bad attitude. Anyone who has ever been on a team knows what it’s like to have to play with people who are not “team players.” Read this book to find out how the main character deals with this challenge.
When I was a kid, A BEAR CALLED PADDINGTON was one of my favorite books. While in London in April, I saw a wonderful collection of Paddington bears at Harrod's, the famous department store. This classic character is back, celebrating his 50th anniversary in a brand new adventure called PADDINGTON HERE AND NOW. After all this time, he still keeps a marmalade sandwich under his hat!
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you can’t learn new things. If you’re interested in animals, weather or the environment, pick up a copy of EARTH MATTERS. You’ll find out lots of things you can do to keep our earth happy and healthy.
For more book suggestions, take a look at our Cool New Books and New in Paperback roundups, as well as our most recent reviews.
Tell us all about your summer reading habits in this month’s poll and question. Have you been saving some books to read over the long break? Let us know!
Summer is a great time for pleasure reading, and I know you’ll find lots of books here to delight you! Happy reading, and stay cool! Carol Fitzgerald for Kidsreads.com

SIMON BLOOM, THE GRAVITY KEEPER by Michael Reisman Sixth-grader Simon Bloom can’t believe his luck when he finds a book that enables him to control the laws of physics. By simply reciting the formulas it contains, he can cancel gravity to fly around his bedroom, or decrease friction so he can slide down the street as if he were on Rollerblades. When two thugs with evil intentions come after Simon, he must use the formulas to save himself and the book from falling into their hands. This funny, fast and imaginative novel from first-time author Michael Reisman will appeal to fans of both fantasy and action adventure.

ELVIS & OLIVE by Stephanie Watson Natalie Wallis thought she'd be spending her summer riding her bike around and around her block --- but that was before she met her quirky new neighbor, Annie Beckett. Before long, Annie is revealing the hiding place beneath her porch, the dead bird she keeps in her pocket, and the details of her mother's death. Natalie and Annie become fast friends, and soon, they've hatched a plan to spy on their neighbors, using the inscrutable code names Elvis and Olive.
