Billie Wind is a girl torn between two worlds: the modern world where pollution, nuclear war and development threaten the earth and the seemingly old-fashioned world of her Seminole tribe. Billie wonders how her people can believe in legends about talking animals and earth spirits when those ancient beliefs seem so unreal to her. When the Seminole Council challenges Billie as a "doubter" she decides to venture alone into the Florida Everglades to see if the Seminole legends are really true. While she's there, she comes to better understand her ancestors and how the earth speaks to us.
