Hope is a nine-year-old girl living in a confusing and frightening time. The American Colonies have grown tired of the English king and his harsh laws and have decided to fight for their independence. Hope's diary describes the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence, and the people who were part of this important moment in history such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. As Hope's story unfolds, her father has left on a secret mission and her brother Ethan has gone to search for him. They are afraid that their father is working for the Tories --- the colonists who support King George of England. The British army is marching closer and closer to Philadelphia; Hope's brother has been captured by the British and put in prison for being a spy; and Hope, her mother and her baby sister flee the city.
