ANDREW LOST Series
by J. C. Greenburg

Titles in Order of Publication:

Book 1: ANDREW LOST: ON THE DOG
J. C. Greenburg
illustrated by Debbie Palen
Random House
ISBN: 0375812776
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew Dubble's science teacher wants his class to do a report on ants. Andrew thinks he can better understand ants and do a great job on the assignment if he can actually get inside an anthill. So he and his little silver robot Thudd create the Atom Sucker, a machine that can shrink people and things down to any size. It sounds like a wonderful idea, but something goes terribly wrong. Andrew accidentally shrinks himself, his cousin Judy and Thudd to microscopic levels! Much to their surprise, they find themselves lost on Harley, their neighbor's basset hound.

First they get lost in Harley's nose, which is no fun for them because they become soaked in disgusting nose goo. But an explosion sends Andrew and Judy blasting through the air --- Harley sneezes them out. They hike to the top of Harley's head, where they are lost in thousands of dog hairs. To make matters worse, they become immersed in a deep oil pit, encounter a bunch of slithering snake-like eyelash mites and must escape the pointy hairs and prickly snout of a gigantic flea. If they can't find a way to get back to the Atom Sucker by 8:01 pm, the Atom Sucker may explode and Andrew, Judy and Thudd will be microscopic forever!

As they struggle to find their way off of Harley, you will learn about:

  • how well dogs can smell and hear
  • why mucus is important
  • what lives in eyelashes
  • creatures whose skeletons are on the outside
  • what goose bumps are
  • why dogs love to play in garbage

Book 2: ANDREW LOST: IN THE BATHROOM
J. C. Greenburg
illustrated by Debbie Palen
Random House
ISBN: 0375812784
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew, Judy and Thudd are clinging for dear life to a hair on Harley's ear, but their troubles will soon become bigger --- and wetter! You see, Harley has had a great time rolling in a bag filled with smelly garbage. Now it is time for Mrs. Scuttle to give her dirty dog a bath. Microscopic Andrew, Judy and Thudd find themselves washed off the dog and lost in the bathroom!

Andrew is able to prevent himself and Thudd from being washed down the drain thanks to one of his inventions, the Umbubble. But Andrew realizes that Thudd has gotten wet --- the buttons on his chest are blinking purple, he is starting to tell jokes and he is sleeping. Andrew knows this is not the way Thudd is supposed to act and he becomes worried. Meanwhile, he, Judy and Thudd must survive scary encounters with mold and mildew, a huge black ant, and Slime City, where they see all the things that get washed away in bathtubs --- it is not a pretty sight. They are able to contact Uncle Al, who tells them that one must look at unusual problems in unusual ways and that Andrew has everything he needs in his head and in his pocket to get himself out of this mess. Will this advice help Andrew, Judy and Thudd escape? Or will they get washed down the drain --- or maybe even flushed?

Amidst all their adventures in the bathroom, you will learn some very interesting facts from Thudd about:

  • where the colors of bubbles come from
  • sponge animals
  • how bugs walk on water
  • what's really cool about germs
  • the importance of antennas to ants
  • what those spots on the shower curtain really are

Book 3: ANDREW LOST: IN THE KITCHEN
J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375812792
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew, Judy and Thudd do escape the bathtub --- only to get flushed down the toilet! Now they have to find their way through a maze of pipes to the kitchen sink. But to get there, they have to travel through all kinds of goop, including alphabet soup and broccoli. When they finally escape the underwater world and reach the kitchen sink, their adventures are far from over.

A monster cockroach comes dangerously close to them and big black flies zoom through the air. Andrew, Judy and Thudd get caught on a big tomato the same time that Mrs. Scuttle decides to make a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. Meanwhile, Thudd's thought chips are still soggy and he continues to tell silly jokes. And to make matters worse, Andrew and Thudd get trapped in the refrigerator and they can't find Judy anywhere. Will the kids survive the kitchen? Or will they end up frozen in the fridge? Time is running out!

Although Thudd is not fully functioning, he still tells Andrew interesting facts about:

  • what diamonds are made of
  • how cockroaches see and taste
  • why teakettles whistle
  • what makes strawberries unique
  • the difference between a microwave and a toaster oven
  • why eggs aren't perfectly round
  • how flies move about

Book 4: ANDREW LOST: IN THE GARDEN
J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375812806
Ages 7-10
96 pages

After being trapped in the refrigerator, buttered on a slice of toast and caught in the sink, Andrew, Judy and Thudd are riding on top of a fly and finally escaping the hazards of Mrs. Scuttle's kitchen. Unfortunately, though, their little savior proceeds to drop them into Mrs. Scuttle's garden. There, our unlucky trio encounters all sorts of things --- including a praying mantis (a skyscraper-tall monster with huge green eyes and legs that seem to go up forever), an earthworm that appears to be the size of a Brontosaurus, bees as big as blimps, and glacier-sized flower petals.

At the same time, Andrew, Judy and Thudd are fully aware that the Atom Sucker will explode in a matter of minutes. Somehow they must find their way back and get unshrunk --- or else they'll be stuck at microscopic size forever!

Although Andrew and Judy are being "pestered" and "bugged" in the garden, Thudd still manages to supply them with lots of cool information, including:

  • what a water bean is
  • the dangers of butterfly wings
  • why earthworms hate the sun so much
  • why queen ants rule
  • the eating preferences of a praying mantis

Book 5: ANDREW LOST UNDER WATER
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375825231
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Despite getting caught in Harley's nose, flushed down a toilet, carried off by a cockroach and dragged down into an anthill, Andrew and Judy got the rest and relaxation they needed on a fun trip to Hawaii. But after days of swimming, eating seaweed salad and helicopter riding, Andrew and Judy are preparing to head back home.

Before leaving, Andrew shows Judy Uncle Al's latest invention: the Water Bug, a Volkswagen Beetle that Uncle Al has converted into a submarine. But when Andrew tries to make a few improvements, he ends up trapping himself, Judy and Thudd inside! Now the Water Bug is stuck on autopilot and headed for the deepest part of the ocean.

While underwater they observe little fish of many different colors, dolphins, a shark, and sponges --- and they even explore an underwater cave. With Judy's quick thinking, they're able to regain control of the Water Bug. However, they are determined to stop Soggy Bob Sloggins in his quest to turn giant squids into "squidwiches." Will they succeed? More importantly though, will they be able to overcome all the dangers they face and not be lost underwater forever?

Andrew and Judy are both quite scared as they try to return to land. But Thudd never seems frazzled and always finds a way to educate Andrew and Judy on a variety of subjects, including:

  • a description of giant squid
  • how many teeth sharks have (the number will astound you!)
  • what porcupine fish do when they're afraid
  • why an octopus changes color
  • the different parts of the earth

Book 6: ANDREW LOST: IN THE WHALE
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 037582524X
Ages 7-10
96 pages

While Andrew, Judy and Thudd are underwater trying to stop Soggy Bob Sloggins from killing rare giant squid, they run into a major problem --- a big blue whale. Unfortunately, the inevitable occurs --- Andrew, Judy and Thudd are scooped up and swallowed by this hungry mammal. They find themselves inside the biggest mouth in the world before traveling into the whale's stomach. It's a pretty disgusting experience for them, especially when they discover all the things the whale has recently swallowed: a tire, a tan can, bottles, a bunch of birthday balloons, and a rubber duck.

Needless to say they're in quite a predicament, but their situation is made even worse by the fact that the Water Bug is caught under the whale's tongue. According to Uncle Al, stomach acid can dissolve almost everything eventually. Fortunately, Andrew and Judy are wearing their Bubble Duds underwater suits, but the uniforms will protect them for only two hours. After that, they could start to fall apart! The only way they can save themselves is to exit from the whale's rear, reenter its mouth, and retrieve the Water Bug.

Will they be able to do all of this before their suits come apart? And if they do recover the Water Bug, will they return home or resume their quest to defeat Soggy Bob?

Although the gang is in real danger of turning into "whale chow," Thudd is thinking as clearly as ever. He reveals the following:

  • the size, weight and eating habits of a blue whale
  • the purpose of whale blubber
  • what a tapeworm is
  • how oil forms in the ocean
  • what storm clouds are made of

Book 7: ANDREW LOST: ON THE REEF
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375825258
Ages 7-10
96 pages

In their seventh adventure Andrew, Judy and Thudd continue their efforts to save giant squids from being turned into giant squidwiches by the infamous Soggy Bob Sloggins. Unfortunately, they've gotten themselves into quite a jam, as the Water Bug smashes into Australia's Great Barrier Reef, home to some of the most dangerous creatures on earth.

To make matters a thousand times worse, a big black suction cup shoots out of Soggy Bob Sloggins's Crab-Mobile and sticks to the hood of the Water Bug. Without their underwater vehicle to protect them, Andrew, Judy and Thudd encounter a number of deadly creatures while on the reef. They include blue-ringed octopuses (which seem harmless at first), giant clams (one grabs a hold of Judy's leg) and cone snails (which have poisonous teeth and tongues like harpoons).

It appears that the brave trio has outsmarted their big bad human foe, but Soggy Bob Sloggins is furious that his plans to build the largest theme park in the world are being thwarted. The kids must find their way through the reef and retrieve the Water Bug before they get themselves into deeper trouble.

Despite all the dangers and risks that accompany their mission, Thudd still provides his pals (and readers) with a number of interesting tidbits, including:

  • the length of the Great Barrier Reef
  • what makes a clam open and close its shell
  • the gooey substance that mussels spread
  • the intelligence level of an octopus
  • a surprising ingredient that can be found in ice cream, pudding and milkshakes

Book 8: ANDREW LOST: IN THE DEEP
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375825266
Ages 7-10
83 pages

Andrew, Judy and Thudd are zooming through the ocean in their trusty Water Bug, ready once and for all to save the giant squids and prevent them from being turned into squidwiches by Soggy Bob Sloggins, the bad man of the sea. Along the way, an unlikely ally surfaces: Burpp, the big blue parrot that belongs to Soggy Bob. Burpp says that he's switching sides and would like nothing more than to end Soggy Bob's aquatic reign of terror. After some serious thought, Andrew, Judy and Thudd allow Burpp to enter their submarine.

Just as they're passing over the deepest part of the ocean, the Water Bug begins losing power and is sinking fast --- the windshield is melting and the vehicle is completely submerged in black, bubbling smoke. To make matters worse, a plethora of weird creatures crosses the paths of Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Burpp: tube worms, monster crabs, saber-toothed viperfish and the Dumbo octopus, to name only a few. More importantly, though, the Dubbles learn some surprising information about Soggy Bob Sloggins that they may be able to use to defeat him. If only Uncle Al and his See Horse would arrive, then their troubles would finally be history.

As he has proven time and again, Thudd has nerves of steel and is always educating Andrew and Judy about what they observe on their various adventures. Here, readers will learn:

  • what bioluminescence is
  • what the ocean floor looks like
  • the threat that giant spider crabs pose to humans
  • what fish are predominantly made of
  • why sperm whales make clicking sounds

Book 9: ANDREW LOST: IN TIME
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375829490
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Following their improbable adventure deep in the Pacific Ocean, where they succeeded in rescuing a giant squid, Andrew, Judy and Thudd are relaxing in Uncle Al's cabin. But the good times don't last long, as the evil Doctor Kron-Tox kidnaps Uncle Al courtesy of the Tick-Tox Box, a time machine he invented.

Thudd determines from the doctor's cryptic message that Uncle Al has traveled back in time to when mammoths lived --- four million years ago! Luckily, Andrew and Judy have a time machine of their own --- the Time-A-Tron, Uncle Al's newest invention --- and they're determined to rescue their beloved uncle. Unfortunately, the Time-A-Tron doesn't work quite right and the Dubbles travel back in time to the very beginning of the universe! Will Andrew, Judy and Thudd regain control of the Time-A-Tron in time to save Uncle Al ... and themselves?

In this ninth adventure, Thudd is not alone in his never-ending quest to educate Andrew and Judy (as well as readers) on a variety of cool subjects, because Uncle Al's time machine is just as intelligent as the Dubbles' super-smart robot. Thudd and the Time-A-Tron share info on:

  • mammoths
  • the speed of light
  • the importance of gravity
  • how the universe began
  • exploding stars

Book 10: ANDREW LOST: ON EARTH
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375829504
Ages 7-10
96 pages

At the start of ANDREW LOST: ON EARTH, giant asteroids and comets are raining down from the sky. Andrew, Judy and Thudd have traveled back in time to the very beginning of planet Earth and are now trapped inside baby Earth, which is one big ocean of lava. Among other challenges, they need to protect themselves from the planet that will smash into Earth and create the moon. Meanwhile, Uncle Al is trapped in the Ice Age after being kidnapped by Doctor Kron-Tox.

Enter Beeper Jones, the evil doctor's nephew who is responsible for collecting insects and spiders for his uncle's theme park of prehistoric animals. He introduces Andrew and Judy to an assortment of creatures, including scorpions, cockroaches, and giant dragonflies. Not exactly a trip to the zoo, but at least Beeper's presence is a nice diversion from all that the Dubbles have had to endure since the Time-A-Tron malfunctioned.

Still, the worst is yet to come as a tsunami sweeps away the Time-A-Tron. Fortunately, Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Beeper survive the giant waves, but the Time-A-Tron is still missing. Can they recover Uncle Al's time travel machine? And if so, will they finally find a way to get that fast-forward button to work?

As you probably know by now, ANDREW LOST books always contain lots of little-known and fascinating facts. This tenth installment in the series is no different. Here you'll learn:

  • the importance of asteroids and comets
  • how the moon came into existence
  • some info about the earth's core, which is anything but "cool"
  • what stromatolites are
  • interesting facts about cockroaches

Book 11: ANDREW LOST: WITH THE DINOSAURS
by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375829512
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Beeper Jones have escaped the molten rock of baby Earth only to find themselves surrounded by dinosaurs in a forest 65 million years ago. Beeper's DNA Detector has detected a human being in their immediate vicinity and they assume it must be Professor Winka Wilde, who was kidnapped by Beeper's uncle, the evil Dr. Kron-Tox. But before they can embark on the search for Uncle Al's partner, they must locate the excitable Beeper, who accidentally activated the emergency exit of the Time-A-Tron and disappeared.

Beeper is found safe and sound, but unfortunately their troubles are only beginning. Andrew gets stuck in quicksand just as a Tyrannosaurus rex is approaching them. Instead of harming the humans, this fearsome creature snatches Thudd and trudges away. Thanks to some quick thinking and a daring scheme by Andrew, Thudd is successfully retrieved. (Uncle Al would have been so proud of his nephew!) The gang is then greeted by a crocodile, the likes of which Andrew has never seen before. After narrowly escaping the deadly bite of this super-crocodile, they experience déjà vu: the Tyrannosaurus has come back!

This time, though, Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Beeper Jones have someone to thank for saving their lives: the one and only Professor Winka Wilde. She informs them that there will be a huge disaster for the whole Earth; very soon, an asteroid as big as a city will crash and make a terrible explosion that will destroy plants and animals weighing more than fifty pounds. Andrew, Judy and Thudd must retrieve the Time-A-Tron, leave the dinosaur age as soon as possible, and rescue Uncle Al before he turns into a human icicle.

Despite the close call with that hungry T. rex, Thudd's brain functions are as strong as ever. Readers will learn:

  • what animal is descended from dinosaurs
  • exactly what quicksand consists of
  • the meaning of the word "triceratops"
  • what living creature has the hardest bite
  • how far an asteroid travels

Book 12: ANDREW LOST: IN THE ICE AGE

by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375829520
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew, Judy and Thudd --- along with Beeper Jones and Professor Winka Wilde --- have escaped the dinosaurs but now find themselves stuck in the Ice Age! With the help of the DNA Detector, Andrew and Judy are at last reunited with their Uncle Al, and they're so excited to be together again. Most believe that their bizarre adventures have ended and that they will be returning to present-day Montana very soon. Unfortunately, this is not the case. It turns out that Doctor Kron-Tox has been capturing animals from different times and hidden them in a glacier. Uncle Al and his companions must find these helpless creatures and get them back to their own times before the arrival of an enormous flood that will destroy everything in its path.

While in the cave where Uncle Al had been staying all this time, the gang observes Doctor Kron-Tox emerging from his time-travel machine, the Tick-Tox Box, and releasing some of the animals he's captured. While Uncle Al tries to pursue the Doctor in the hopes that he can lead him to the other animals, Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Beeper leave the cave so they can rescue the capybaras (rodents belonging to the same family of animals as guinea pigs) that escaped from the Tick-Tox Box.

Can everyone accomplish their goals before the big flood hits? And just who are the five individuals Andrew, Judy, Thudd and Beeper meet after their near fatal encounter with lions and tigers --- and why are these people carrying spears?

Despite the prospect of being swept away in a massive flood, Thudd still has the ability to dispense some fascinating facts. This time he explains:

  • what a glacier is
  • the definition of "dander"
  • what animal may be the world's best smeller
  • why earth has lots of ice ages
  • what makes a teratorn bird so special

Book 13: IN THE GARBAGE

by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN: 0375835628
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Andrew's newest invention, the Goa Constrictor, is a giant fake snake designed to keep the world from getting buried in garbage by swallowing and then shrinking it. A mishap involving classmate Jeremy Bogart's invention and the remote control that regulates the Goa Constrictor results in Andrew, Judy and Thudd becoming microscopic in size and sitting on tiny garbage that Andrew had shrunk previously.

Unfortunately two sanitation workers arrive just in time to scoop up Andrew and Judy, deposit them in a plastic bag, and take them to the city dump. While there, they get up close and personal with a handful of red wriggler worms and even go for a little ride --- on the beak of Matilda, a seagull! Fearing they'll become bird poop, they take Thudd's advice and avoid becoming Matilda's next meal.

What follows are pulse-pounding adventures with centipedes, wolf spiders and bombardier beetles. Panic sets in after Andrew, Judy and Thudd overhear a disturbing conversation between two people that could significantly impact their future.

While Andrew and Judy are desperate to return to their normal size, Thudd shows off his knowledge on such topics as:
  • the importance of bacteria and fungus in relation to garbage
  • the eating habits of worms
  • what a worm's head looks like
  • why garbage smells
  • who garbologists are

Book 14: WITH THE BATS

by J. C. Greenburg
Random House
ISBN-10: 0375835636
ISBN-13: 9780375835636
Ages 7-10
96 pages

Thanks to the Goa Constrictor, Andrew's latest invention, he, Judy and Thudd have been shrunk down to the size of bugs and are hanging on for dear life on the back of a bat. They're transported to a spooky cave where eventually they're able to free themselves from the bat only to be greeted by thousands of slimy worms. Andrew compares this experience to "walking through a field of wiggly sausages."

The Dubbles come face to face with a number of unusual creatures, including a blind cave salamander that possibly can help them exit the cave. All they have to do, according to Thudd, is to "follow salamander, get to water. Find way to get out, maybe." Narrowly escaping the vampire bat (truly one of the scariest creatures you'll ever see), Andrew, Judy and Thudd enter an enormous room that resembles an ice palace. In reality, it used to be a burial place during the Stone Age (the presence of multiple skulls is the big tip-off for Thudd) and their nerves are kicked up a few notches.

Will the gang ever be able to find the light at the end of the cave and return to a normal life for a change?

In this fourteenth Andrew Lost book, the all-knowing Thudd offers readers the following tidbits:

  • why bats hang upside down when they sleep
  • the disgusting truth about bat poop
  • the food that disgusts beetles
  • what stalactites and stalagmites are
  • why many cave animals have no color

Book 15: IN THE JUNGLE

by J. C. Greenburg
Random House

Unfortunately they become acquainted with a number of strange and frightening creatures, including rhinoceros beetles, forest dragon lizards, peppermint stick insects and tree kangaroos. As if that's not enough excitement (or terror) for one day, they also dangle dangerously above the jaws of a carnivorous plant and have a close encounter with a carpet python. Will they ever reach Uncle Al? Or will they be shrunken Down Under forever?

Thudd always shows off his extensive knowledge of science and the Great Outdoors. Here, readers will learn about:
