Characters
Artemis Fowl --- one of the most ingenious, devious and dastardly criminal masterminds of all time. Even more frightening, he is just twelve years old. Armed with his family's ill-gotten fortune and unhindered in the way of parental supervision, Artemis spends his days plotting creative new ways to fill the Fowl coffers with vast riches. Blessed with the kind of rare intellect not seen since Mozart and possessing an innate knack for exploiting the weaknesses of others, there are few who can prove to be a worthy match against his cleverness and technical wizardry.
Butler --- Artemis's faithful manservant and bodyguard, as well as one of his few real friends in life. His commanding physical presence, sheer brute strength and skill in martial arts have gotten Artemis out of many a close call. Butler provides the brawn to complement Artemis's brains, and the two together are a force to be reckoned with. Pity the person (or fairy) who gets in their way!
Juliet --- Butler's beautiful teenage sister. She has a passion for pro-wrestling and is a wannabe-bodyguard trying to follow in her brother's footsteps. However, sometimes her youth and immaturity get in the way, making her more of a liability than an asset.
Captain Holly Short --- Artemis's archrival and a fairy from the underground world. As the first female officer of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance) Unit, she is every bit as ingenious and fiercely determined as Artemis. Brazen in the face of danger and imbued with a strong sense of right from wrong, her quick-witted thinking and courageousness make her one of the unit's best officers. Don't let the diminutive size of this auburn-haired fairy fool you --- despite her small stature and cute elfin features, she is much tougher than she looks.
Commander Julius Root --- the leader of the LEPrecon Unit charged with protecting the citizens of the Underground World. Constantly red-faced and ulcer-ridden, his short fuse is often at boiling point, usually due to the latest blunders of someone on his unit. Captain Holly Short in particular has a knack for testing the limits of his patience. But despite appearances and his apparent inability to crack a smile, Root has a soft spot for all of his officers, particularly Holly, and would do anything to protect them.
Foaly --- the paranoid centaur in charge of all things technical, from surveillance and communications to transport and firearms, for the LEPrecon Police Unit. His goal is to ensure that the underground world will never be discovered by humans. A technology genius, he is always inventing new and novel devices to ensure that the fairy world remains a step ahead of the aboveground realm. His sarcastic comments are a source of constant irritation to others, but nonetheless they are tolerated because he is such a respected and invaluable member of the team.
Opal Koboi --- an evil pixie genius and formidable opponent of Artemis Fowl, Commander Root and Holly Short. With her diabolical mind, complete lack of morals, and superior technical skills that can outwit even Foaly, Opal makes for a dangerous enemy. She has no allegiances and no one --- including her own family --- is safe from her ruthless quest for world domination. After running her father out of business with her technology firm, Koboi Labs, Opal put her formidable resources to use masterminding two successive attacks on the fairy underworld.
Mulch Diggums --- a kleptomaniac tunnel dwarf whose sticky fingers have earned him a permanent spot on the LEP's most-wanted list --- that is when he's not already serving prison time. But with his unusual combination of attributes, including an enormous jaw, formidable tunneling skills, suction-cup pores and powerfully explosive gas, Mulch is a master escape artist. His unique talents, while making him a constant source of irritation to the LEP, have made him an unlikely ally as well, and he is often called upon to help out during desperate situations.
Billy Kong --- Also known as Jonah Lee, Billy is the "security" hired by the Paradizo family to protect their home. His sole drive is to exact revenge on Demons for the killing of his brother, and he is willing to turn against his employers in order to see that wish fulfilled. Unfortunately, he does not know that the story he was told about his brother is a lie.
Doodah Day --- a Pixie who has been successful as a fish smuggler for over a century. He helps Artemis and his companions get into the Paradizo mansion security system. He is adept with mechanical items and is an outstanding driver. He claims that he can drive anything, even if it is something created by Martians.
Minerva Paradizo --- a young French girl who has attracted the eye of Artemis. Very pretty, this blonde-haired lass has an intelligence on par with that of Artemis. She desires fame, hoping to win the Nobel Prize, but is also ruthless and vengeful. She feels Artemis is a worthy opponent.
No. 1 --- an Imp whose strongest desire is to be a demon. He has the undemonlike desire to know who his mother is and is frequently nervous about everything. He is captured by Minerva Paradizo for study but "rescued" by Artemis. Ultimately he seeks to help bring the Demon island of Hybras back from Limbo.
